DOES PALM OIL CULTIVATION HARM FAMILIES?

The palm oil industry is praised for reducing poverty as well as building new roads, schools and healthcare facilities.

The United Nations and the World Bank have acknowledged palm oil’s role in successfully reducing poverty in Malaysia. More than 40 percent of the oil palm planted area in Malaysia is tended by family farmers, also called smallholders. Palm oil production has reduced the country’s poverty rate from 50 percent just after its independence to less than five percent today.

Richard Ashworth, a European Parliament member from the United Kingdom, said, “Without a doubt, the Malaysian government has done extraordinary work, lifting tens of thousands of smallholders out of ‘absolute poverty’, giving them a decent standard of living. That’s impressive, intelligent and it has worked very well.”
