What is happening today with palm oil?

Activists today are urging the use of sustainably produced palm oil, rather than boycotting it. Clearly, palm oil itself is not the problem, but rather it is irresponsibly produced palm oil.

The palm oil industry is putting practices in place to ensure ample supply of sustainable palm oil such as the development and enforcement of stringent standards and certification protocols.

Malaysia’s Primary Industries Minister Teresa Kok, said “Sustainable palm oil is the way forward. That’s why the Malaysian government is pushing for MSPO certification for the oil palm industry.”

Achieving MSPO became mandatory as of 2020, and the country is working toward 100% compliance.

Unfortunately, much of the sustainable palm oil being produced isn’t being purchased. According to Bloomberg, the world has plenty of sustainable oil, but no one wants to pay the premium purchase price. They report that only half of what is being sustainably produced is being sold as sustainable oil.

Consumers can support this campaign by raising awareness of the availability of sustainable palm oil and supporting companies committed to using it.
